Sports washing doesn’t apply to Western countries

Have you ever seen a burgerland sportsball game? A lot of times, before games start, they’re will be a massive burger empire flag on the field and celebration of veterans cough war criminals cough. Even if they’re not rolling out the massive flag and jerking off the military, every game starts with someone singing the burger spangled banner.

Believing the NATO narrative about Ukraine and thinking financial support against the Russian hordes is the single most important thing in the world and yet at the same time thinking it’s cool and good that this support hinges on football man playing with different advertisements and brands on his jersey is playing liberalism on nightmare difficulty.

The whole “sportswashing” bit never made a lot of sense to me. I highly doubt Saudi Arabia, Qatar or the UAE care much about changing a bunch of western liberal’s opinions on them. In my opinion owning these clubs is more about access and leverage with the UK gov, and perhaps a degree of vanity.

Oh they are definitely sportswashing, but it has more to do with the fact that it helps manufacture consent for western governments selling them arms and generally using them to help destabilize the Middle East
