I would say conservatives are worse on social policy and libertarians are worse on economic places

Seems like most conservatives I’ve met are decent apolotical people tricked by news and nice words like community and freedom but libertarians think they’ve uncovered some great secret about capitalism which can be annoying

Same here. Conservatives might watch the news or read a paper, so they have terrible reactionary views. But they tend to think all politicians are as bad as each other and may not even bother voting. The think politics is what happens in the legislature and the local governments.

With careful discussion, it’s rare to come across someone who doesn’t agree on the basics with socialists, such as being against: racism, war, price-gouging, favouring shareholders over consumers, pollution (regardless of their views on climate change – no one wants to take their kids or grandkids to feed radioactive ducks in the local pond). And being for: good education, workers controlling their working environment, good healthcare, infrastructure projects, good wages. Etc, etc.

The sticking point is convincing them that they’re really a communist, and getting them to accept that certain things will happen in capitalism and that other things can only happen under socialism.

They may hold conservative views bcs of media hegemony, but they at the core don’t care who’s on the seat of power

  • There’s a lot of overlap in those two things. It can vary based on the person’s age, class relation, national origin, etc…so Idk really. I do find that sometimes conservatives can be these dopey and misinformed-but-well-meaning types, and could conceivably be brought around to understanding the true, awful nature of capitalism and the necessity of socialism, whereas libertarians are just turbo-charged death cultists for capitalism. Again this is anecdotal.

Libertarians worse. Both are insufferable idiots but a libertarian has that liberal smugness that just compounds how fucking awful it is having to deal with them.

I’m not entirely sure what a Libertarian is to be honest, the definition changes by the day. Could someone help me out?

It’s a broad term. Basically anyone who wants to weaken/destroy the state might call themselves such. It was popularized thanks to oil oligarchs before they realized they could just make the mainstream neo-liberal and get what they want. The positions that are commonly held by followers can include deregulation, decreasing taxes, gun-rights, increasing free-speech, decreasing oppression for minorities, and decreasing militarism (though some want military to be the only thing the government spends money on).
