It is the anthem of once 15 united republics that were a beacon of hope against the western capitalist powers and fascism, it also paved the way for many AES countries we know today.

I disagree. In a time and place where communism is frequently compared and deemed equal to nazism, anything that contributes to the normalization of communism or the Soviet Union is welcome.

Not like it is any productive to discuss about it however: one cannot control what does or what does not become a meme.

Memes are often used as political tools, and the USSR anthem could have this potential to improve communism’s image and perhaps make some people curious, but in its actual use case I see it used in a derogatory way mostly. Like “haha look 20 trillion dead stalin’s big spoon” types. Similar to the credit score memes or the “bing chilling” ones., where they’re funny because “Mao is a criminal” and etc.

Good take. The only reason it’s a meme is because people think it’s edgy and bad, kind of like the Nazis.

If it were understood by people for what it was it wouldn’t be a meme, it’d be a pride anthem

Edit: other very good perspectives I see here. I revise my opinion originally stated above

I disagree, I think memes may be a good place for people to become interested in the soviet union and look into learning more. The right gains plenty of impressionable people through a similar manner, why not us?

  • I was going to agree, as I find it to be pretty disrespectful… but then comrades in this thread have raised good points too. Sometimes memes are how you get people interested to learn more about the thing they’re memeing about, even if it’s just 5-10% of the memers.

  • For me it’s not a meme, it’s a symbol of hope and a great piece on its own. I don’t mind at all people using more or less ironically because at least they are using it, and it’s a tiny breach in the absolutely suffocating polish taboo wall.

The replies have successfully changed my mind lol

Probably hypocritical for me to say this as well, since if it weren’t for all those memes I probably wouldn’t have even been a user in this website
