  • Sci-Fi authors and philosophers have created 200 years of work about what an artificial mind would be and think like, and the dangers posed to society by that. While I’m not saying that the AI we have now is anything I would call sentient, it’s very interesting that yet again we walk directly into the rake.

I just heard an actual computer scientist suggesting that chatGPT can’t be biased or racially prejudiced, because it’s just a computer. A computer which you should well know is trained on the internet, where racists go to be racist, subsumed in a racist culture generally. I even saw one guy using it to measure bias in a text by simply asking it what bias it think exists, stating that this is superior to a human doing it because it’s a machine. You could maybe argue it’s somewhat more average than a given individual human might be, but that means very little.

So if philosophy is just telling people there’s a rake they’re going to step on, when you know full well they’re still gonna go step on that bitch, what is the point? I see why the stereotype of a philosophy major is a smug do-nothing, because you would learn very quickly that no one will ever listen to you anyway, no matter how right you may be.

We don’t even edge stepping on the rake either. We let them get away with copyright infringement at a scale pirates could never have dreamed.
