I was taking a walk (as I always do) on Saturday morning around my neighbourhood. There’s a couple of ponds around and on the bank of one of those ponds, I saw two strange ducks. Their bright yellow beaks really caught my attention and I took a couple of photos, but I thought they were just strange mallards.

Upon further research once I got home, however, it turned out that these ducks were, in fact, Yellow-Billed Ducks! They are only native to some parts of Africa. Not sure how or why they came here to North-Western Germany! Maybe escaped pets?

Ducks here have a reputation for being mean and aggressive. But one day, I was standing next to a creek. Suddenly two ducks waddled right by me with their babies. They were very calm, tilted their head at me as if to say “how do you do, sir”. Then casually slipped into the water. Since then, I’ve developed a real soft spot for ducks.

Ducks as mean and aggressive? That’s interesting. I have never seen any aggressive or mean ducks, they’re always really chill here. You have to look out for geese and swans, though. They can get angry and hiss at you for anything!

Yes, that’s true about geese and swans. But I knew a guy who bicycled through a park, and a duck chased him for about a minute and bit him so hard he bled. I’ve met other people with similar stories. Then again, maybe they just can’t tell the difference between a duck or a goose…
