For reasons no one can fathom

The ROM hacking community takes this personally.

ROM hacking and well, just retro development like this is awesome. I think there is something to be said about the creativity that comes with a limited canvas and so on

Afaik the DS basically has GBA hardware built in, right? So I don’t see why there was a chance of it not working

Mostly that it was a GBC game being released in 2023 with the website being the assumed location it would be played. I honestly figured it was just a generic file type that was made in the style or with the constraints of the Game Boy Color, not that it was actually a Color game.

I love this so much. I need to break out one of those gameboy studio tools and take a crack at a game of my own.

If there isn’t a cartridge then it’s just a ROM not a game imo. I know it’s pedantic to specify but it matters when there are people who’ve released modern GB cartridges

It’s a game, just not a cartridge. Just because it’s in a file format doesn’t make it not a game. I’m planning to check it out on my GB Advance SP with an EZ Flash cartridge, so it’ll be playing on actual hardware.

It would be so much cooler if they actually released a cartridge for it.

no its just a download or a site to play it from. No cart. Kinda sad about it, would have been a sick collectable.

My 67 year old mom’s got a new rebuilt and improved Game Boy Colour. She wanted a switch, but dear lord watching her try to operate mine…so I was like hey what about a new Game Boy, there’s people on Etsy that rebuild them. She’s happier than a pig on shit, and I don’t have to answer endless support calls + she’s got a super sized library to work through from my old Game Boy games. Will have to check this out to see if I can get her one of these.

This is such a fantastic idea! The gameboy was such an amazing system and it’s so awesome to see it still being appreciated and even games on it being experienced for the first time by newcomers. My father was wanting to get into gaming as well but one of his main gripes was “there’s too many buttons to learn” I think I might just get him a gameboy! Idk why I didn’t consider that before thank you so much for the idea!

My dad’s actually a bigger gamer than I am. He is being stubborn about retiring, but I’m going to get him a PS5 when he retires in the next year or so. He was also begging me to just get my mom something simple, as he too, didn’t want to have to explain how to use a Switch to her all the time. The Game Boy is such a good idea for those kind of folks, and you should see what people are doing to those things now. I almost bought myself one, not going to lie.

From other comments, it sounds like there are no physical carts.

An Everdrive would probably work and they’re only like $25 for a Chinese one, plus a few bucks for a micro SD. It’s not like you’d need a big one!

I used an everdrive for my megadrive (lol) and it worked flawlessly! I highly recommend they get one of these for their grandmother that is a great idea!

Retro handhelds have really revived people’s appetites for retro-styled games. There’s a lot of fluff on itch.io, but there’s good stuff there too.
