Nimona, was lost in the shuffle during Disney’s acquisition of Blue Sky Studios, but was remarkably brought back from the brink by Annapurna Studios. The film wonderfully marries a “castlepunk” universe reminiscent of Final Fantasy with a great narrative filled with humor and memorable characters.
Nimona was really the heart of the story, delivering some of the funniest lines and most quotable moments. The film’s style and humor, in many ways, reminded me of the charm of Road to El Dorado.
In addition to the engaging narrative and characters, Nimona has a breathtaking animation style. The finale, for instance, features a striking contrast of bright white against darkness. It had a small touch of chromatic aberration that added a unique depth and beauty to the film.
Any other year, this would be the best animated film, but we had Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse this year. However, Nimona is a very close runner-up. 9.5/10.
Ha, watched this yesterday and it really is a great looking and very fun movie.
It’s hilarious for long stretches, but still manages to hit more thoughtful notes and does not succumb to being cheesy.
I also really dig the soundtrack.
I’m surprised at how positive the consensus is on this movie, it looked pretty meh from the trailers.
Felt the same for me. Who knows, most likely will surprise me and I’ll enjoy it!
What? They made a movie? I loved the graphic novel, thanks so much for pointing this out!
Good movie; I was crying for the last twenty minutes of it.
I gave it a watch last night after having seen this post. I thought the ending was a little trite, but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed it! The characters were great, the story was compelling, the humor hit the mark, and the animation was unique and beautiful.
I’m a big fan of the comic it’s based on, and found myself struggling to get past how much they changed. I can see on a more objective level that the movie is great on its own merits, and actually kind of wish I could have watched it without the baggage of my expectations, existing knowledge etc.
Wow, I hadn’t heard about this at all. It looks great, gotta check it out

It’s good and LOL-funny in places, and I had no previous knowledge of the comic or whatever it was apparently based on. It does refer to the existence of same-sex couples which will enrage people who like to get enraged at such things.
I don’t see any references to Nimona and BPD, but the alienation/despair, shapeshifting, and behavior did have me wondering.
Anecdote: about 30mins into the movie I realized N reminded me of my college gf: goth grrrrl chaos agent with naturally-exaggerated canines, pixie haircut, and black humor. I smiled at that.
The film was dope! As an adult I really enjoyed it, I think it deserves a theatrical release. It varies quite a bit from the original graphic novel, adding more to the story and in a different setting. I found the comparison of trans acceptance & Nimona were a little on the nose, but a good message for youths
