  • Lol. Wild!

”The company accused 10 anonymous defendants of violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and federal racketeering laws"

So… Their lawyers were bored? I admit, I don’t understand the legal value of brining the case against an anonymous person.

“Microsoft is taking a firm stand against the misuse of its generative AI services and sending a clear message that the weaponization of its AI technology by online actors will not be tolerated.”

Uh… Wow. But I suppose my own firm stances sometimes also involve meaningless gestures.

Standard disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer. I’m just someone who has been exposed to too much marketing technobable bullshit. I’ll allow that maybe my bullshit-o-meter is being unfair?

    Anyway, interesting read. Thanks!

  • I like my politics boring if it gets the job done and keeps improving and iterating on a better system.

    Absolutely.

Of course, I try to stay aware that my ability to wait patiently for a better world is, in itself, a privilege.

There’s wisdom in carefully iterating forward.

But billionaires also need something to help them focus on cooperation toward a better world. They need to believe in some non-zero chance that the fate of some person they stepped on could randomly suddenly become their own fate.

I don’t have answers for how that happens, but history says it’s almost never been pleasant for anyone concerned.

I don’t know if we can all do better. I hope so.

  • Mastodon doesn’t by design, so they’re gonna have a much, much harder time there.

In theory, yes. But what early switching folks are reporting is that the total impressions are much lower on Mastodon, but the total engagement is much higher, for the same effort.

Which is confusing unless we factor in what we know about Twitter farming bot account on purpose to create a false appearance of success.

Of course, there’s still the matter of Twitter genuinely has orders of magnitude more users. So as an either/or proposition, no way does it, yet, make sense to ditch Twitter for Mastodon.

But for the value-to-reach ratio, with the same effort applied to both, anyway, Mastodon is actually already a better value than Twitter.

All that to say, yeah, Twitter is better, purely due to the user base, and Mastodon’s algorithm actually treats creators better. Which we kind of already knew, as it was created by people fed up with Twitters abusive algorithms.

  • She felt like she was literally just in a room with people all around her and a microphone.

It’s hard not to read this as a power play when she was being paid by someone known for memorably misogynist statements, and for needing to go to court against his own sex worker.

I’m inclined to infer that the worst creep factors of old rich American men may have poisoned the vibe in the room.

And yeah, all statements about leopards and faces and knowing better apply here.

I assume Carrie can afford to choose clients carefully. I hope this gives her pause to take stock, and that she moves on to wiser choices.

  • As a candidate, I have a couple of trusted recruiters I prefer to work through.

I found them through trial and error, and peer recommendations.

As an employer, every year I call and buy lunch for at least about a dozen potential future employees, to remind them that my team exists and that I think they could be a good fit. These are mostly past employees of mine, but may include folks I’ve met through my professional network, at professional networking events, or peers that are currently growing out of other roles toward the roles I need.

I sell my team and organization hard, during intverviews, to candidates that come in cold, but with relevant experience.

Sometimes I can hire the exact folks I spent years recruiting. Sometimes I get lucky and hire someone with the relevant experience who just happened to apply. Sometimes neither of those groups are interested in a job change, and I hire someone inexperienced but trainable.
