I second @footfaults@hexbear.net 's point: read the Jakarta Method. The most eye-opening thing about that book was how in every country where it happened, the people living here had the same idea “something that is so outrageous can’t happen here”.
In Indonesia specifically, the communists were already armed and willing to fight for the liberals’ democracy. They rejected the offer and as a result, the communists were massacred and the country’s fragile democracy was crushed.
Because we have people who expect no consequences for enabling it before an election.
