    Is this mostly to ensure that the two threads don’t twist and that they end up laying side by side, or is there a less apparent purpose?

      @Fermion Yes. A #TrolleyNeedle is a type of #LayingTool, though the manufacturer says it can be used for other purposes too. In #CrossStitch, a laying tool is used to make sure stitches lay flat. I use mine to help me catch knots starting to form as I’m #Railroading stitches so the don’t get unmanageable. I also feel that they look much nicer combining the Railroading with the use of the trolley needle.
