Ahhh thank god the left stood by President Johnston and didn’t fracture into chaos, could you imagine if they did? That’d enable a unified right to run a train on them and do everything they were complaining about but much much worse and ultimately usher in the end of left wing politics in america for decades. Fortunately our leftwing is tooo politically effective.

JFC the anti-war movement wasn’t the backbone of the American left, it was bougie hedonistic kids who really didn’t want to be sent off to die for their parents’ ideology. The kneecapping of the American left happened when Cold War politics purged the labor movement (y’know, the actual backbone of the left) of militant leftists.

Plus as the other commenter pointed out, there was an anti-war candidate who had a lot of support but the establishment rejected him, effectively handing the election to Nixon. You could argue that something similar has happened three elections in a row now - the Dems don’t want to win if winning means electing somebody good.

It’s a combination of wanting someone they can control, and fundamentally wanting to appease the PMC with the working class being badgered into following suit rather than the other way around.
