Reportedly, the USS Independence signaled to the Amerigo Vespucci: “You are the most beautiful ship in the world.”

Our navy, for almost a century. Not every ship training requires to be done on a nuclear carrier.

I’m genuinely curious what modern day sailors have to learn aboard a ship like this that applies to the actual work they would be doing in a real world scenario, likely not aboard one of these ships.

They are getting trained to listen to and understand the see, winds, and weather conditions, because on a tall ship you have to do that to a degree incomparable to modern, engine powered ships.

Adding to @Muzzle answer, the smaller you go with boats, the harder it becomes to sail offshore. Don’t misunderstand me, the Vespucci is huge (83 walkable meters long), it definitely isn’t like sailing on a 10m sailboat, and it operates on wind and on engines (they are well hidden, but it has modern diesel engines).

I definitely know of Germany since a female trainee got sexual attacked by other trainees on it.
