The Pixel 9 series is now rumored to adopt an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Since the Pixel 6’s switch to an under-display fingerprint sensor, people have complained about unlock performance being a regression from the days of Pixel Imprint. Performance has improved over the years, but the Pixel 9 series is now rumored to adopt an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

I’ve had two LG phones that had a fingerprint sensor/power button on the backside of the phone. I miss that arrangement. The button/sensor was way more ergonomic. My index finger would naturally end up in that spot when I pick up the phone. I find the screen fingerprint readers are more awkward and less reliable, especially once you add a screen protector. Unfortunately, LG got out of the smartphone business. Just because a feature is newer tech doesn’t mean it is better.

My current phone has the power button/print scanner on the side, just below the volume controls. It’s pretty convenient, my thumb slips right onto it, but the smaller area does have its downsides, like I have to make sure to line it up just like one of ways it checked for when setting up.

The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on my S23 is absolute dog shit, I miss my Pixel 4. But reviews seem to imply it’s the best technology out there for the job, so I guess it’s a me issue… :/
