there are a few; qwant, ddg, ecosia, startpage, searx etc. They’re all pretty good.
As for the shady stuff, what was it? was it that the ceo (i think) was in bed with the advertising industry? If so, people change. He may well have been in bed with them, but from what I have seen, he’s not anymore. Anyway, there are lots of other search engines/agregators available.
stop using google. No wonder they get away with everything. people keep using them.

brave search is the closest alternate that actually has decent results
