My in laws used to get so mad at my wife for smoking pot. Recently they weren’t even a little mad to hear that I’d used it on a road trip as a replacement for Dramamine. They also have chilled the fuck out about other drugs since I described how lsd has improved my mental health.

Pot is just awesome. Best analgesic and antiemetic I can get otc, most fun one too

Sigh… leave it to Lemmy to turn a discussion about cannabis into complaining about Gaza again like in almost every other thread. Everyone knows about the genocide and how awful it is, but none of us can do anything about it right now and it’s not relevant to the topic at hand. Can we please have a discussion about other things without it just devolving into fighting over it?

Anyway, as a Canadian, our country hasn’t fallen into mass chaos and drug abuse despite cannabis being legalized. I’m sure the federal government loves the extra tax dollars, and we don’t need to buy from shady black market dealers so it’s usually safer. I hope America can learn from what we’re doing up north, cannabis shouldn’t be illegal.

Hopefully the Republicans lose in a massive fucking landslide so their shitty beliefs and ideals that are used like hammers to hurt my fellow Americans and continue to send us into tailspins every fucking time they get involved or get power, along with the corrupt and illegitimate SCOTUS, can all eat a bag of dicks and then do us all a favor and die in a (figurative) fire together.

And that would cause innumerable other problems. This issue is not that simple. If it was, it would have been solved decades ago.

Look, I hate this holy war. I’m angry beyond words we’re still watching people die in that region. I’ve been alive a long time, and this stupid fucking war has been killing civilians – fucking innocent children – in waves the entire time I’ve been alive. But it really isn’t as simple as just ‘defund them’.

thats a pretty decisive claim. how do you support your assertion? for my part it seems clear to me that the president does in fact have the power to stop the war by depriving one side the means of continuing it, and I’ve showed the levers of power she could pull. I’m not saying it’s easy, I’m saying it’s a hell of a lot simpler than people seem to be willing to concede.

edit: also, what’s the cost of doing nothing? or rather continuing to do nothing? we just twiddle our thumbs and go “golly gee wizz aw shucks dang they’re sure blowing stuff up over there” until the genocide is finished? watch, as you seem to be content to do for your whole lifetime, as an atrocity plays out?

That whole region has been a powder keg for a very, very long time. It’s not just a war that keeps flaring up, it’s a holy war with insane fanatics on many sides, and it’s frankly amazing it hasn’t exploded before now.

I’m not trying to be decisive, just saying in my experience of watching this conflict over several decades, it’s far from simple. Every time it flares up like this, some people chime in with the same exact assertions, and looking at it in a vacuum, those ideas make some sense. But the geopolitics of this is very complex, with tendrils everywhere, and if simple solutions would work, we wouldn’t be here now.

I don’t know the answer, but I know from watching this play out many times under many US presidents that without all the behind-the-scenes diplomatic information, no amount of armchair quarterbacking can come close to what’s been tried and failed. Some of those failures have led to wider wars, with many, many more deaths.

alright, a, first off, the situation is exploding right now. the powder keg is boiling over and spreading to other countries like lebanon and iran. if it’s the geopolitics that have you convinced, then please explain the specific geopolitical factors that have you convinced. ill admit my ignorance fair and square. if it’s all the previous presidents who were deeply invested in finding a solution but ultimately failed, tell me about that. a response would ideally include how they attempted to regulate arms exports or hold (as far as i can tell an effectively unchecked) israel in any way accountable for belligerence and aggression and grievance.

you say you’re not decisive, yet you tell me with what i can only read as finality that depriving israel of the means to wage war wouldn’t lead to de-escalation. im not even saying you’re wrong, but im asking how you can be so certain its simplicity would lead to its failure. it seems pretty obvious (to me at least) that if they really need those arms for self defense they will stop doing the aggressive acts that i propose we condition their arms by. fuck a ceasefire, hold their bombs over their head and make them play nice if they need them so badly. if they dont play nice, take their fucking toys away.

can we both agree that the cost of continuing to do nothing would be actively supporting genocide?

You’re calling who? Ceasefire? Sorry I can’t hear you over all the sharply-pointed nothing that’s been doing. Ask me later when I’ve finished genociding all these people I’m trying to ethnic cleanse from their land im apartheiding.”

israel “respecting” the terms of a ceasefire (to which it was effectively indifferent) that in no way addressed the fundamental grievances of the palestenians: blockades, apartheid, land encroachment, property confiscation, eviction and demolition, restriction of food and other forms of aid, human rights violations, and violations of international law (collectively constituting a violent campaign of ethnic cleansing and annexation) doesnt constitute the benevolent nonviolent “respect” for peace you seem to be suggesting. nor does this campaign continuing during what some are pleased to call “ceasefire” suggest an interest in relieving those very real grievances, incompatible with a viable or, in evidence, peaceful palestinian society.

Lots of people making lots of assumptions tonight, huh?

I want the CIA to take out Bibi and his cabinet to be put down like the rabid dogs they are before the start WW3. I actively hope Israel is treated like the Nazis before them and we Nuremberg each and every IDF officer, soldier, and settler that has participated in the litany of war crimes that have taken place. I hope Israeli zionists get the same wake up call that the Nazi supporters after WW2. I hope the Americans that have been preaching support for the zionists are treated like the douche bags waving Nazi flags at Trump parades.

Do I think anyone not voting for Harris because of her lack of “sufficient calls for a ceasefire” are fucking morons? Yes. You are all fucking morons.

Another election cycle, another useless pledge to legalize marijuana as a push to pander votes. She said this prior to running as Biden’s VP, then did nothing with her time in office.

Similarly, I recall similar propaganda from Trump in 2016 and 2020. Nothing came of that, either.

Rescheduled from 1 -> 3. Not sure I understand the significance of this change other than to look like doing something without legalizing it.

Schedule 1 drugs are those deemed to have no medical use and have an extremely high likelihood for abuse. They are the first target for the DEA and have no legal use status (cannabis currently gets around this due to administration level memos to not interfere with state law, but that’s all)

Schedule 3 are those with accepted medical usage and a low or moderate likelihood for abuse. They need to be prescribed and need a prescription no older than 6 months to fill.

Essentially, if cannabis is moved to schedule 3, it becomes medically legal in all 50 states that don’t have specific laws outlawing its use (I don’t know if any of those exist). It’s a major step towards legalization and the biggest you can make without a law.

The big win from schedule 3 is ability for American researchers to study it legally and easily, on-shore. Obviously it doesn’t belong in the list with those other schedule 3s (ketamine and suboxone), but it is gonna be baby steps towards legalization so long as the powerful alcohol and private prison lobbies exist.

It brings the conversation up to the national spotlight, and while it’s a half measure, it’s forward progress, which itself creates inertia that can bring about real change.

That’s what Biden’s current plan is.

It doesn’t go far enough for me, but it sets up his successor to take it even further. Which it sounds like is what she’s planning to do.

This is a bit more than trump. He would only drop vague comments during speeches. This is an official statement that follows bidens previous reschedule activity. So things are being done but intentionally slowly and not definitively. They can only drive it so slowly though so will happen if not derailed by someone else.
