Braided string cheese. It wasn’t always these individual sticks. For many years it was fresh twisted mozzarella with little black seeds, and you had to rip it into lengths. Now when I look for or ask about that people act like I’m an alien with two heads. I swear this used to exist!
This is the best explanation I could find. Growing up in Connecticut I used to see it in regular grocery stores shrink wrapped near the other forms of fresh mozzarella, but maybe I can hunt it down in a specialty store now.
