The team then conducted digs in Belize’s Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. The ancient fish canals, paired with holding ponds, were used to channel and catch freshwater species such as catfish.

Interesting. I was just listening to something last night talking about how people all over Europe stayed near the sea as the sea level rose after the end of the last ice age because it was just easier to catch fish and seafood than to hunt for it. They still hunted, but fishing was just easier. And humans are smart, so we are good at figuring out how to do things more easily and more efficiently.

I guess this is another example.
