If I broke a rule, I apologize, but I’d like to know what I did. Yesterday, I posted a user-generated map of ICE agent sightings and Lemmy.world’s automod immediately deleted the post and banned me from the entire site. I have no idea why that post, above all my other interactions with !resist@fedia.io, warranted a sitewide ban. Is it because I changed the title to blame a vile subreddit when the map went down? I really hope it isn’t partisan bias.
YDI but glad you figured it out! generally, it’s good practice to just reach out to a mod. but i guess you were kinda stuck between a a rock and a hard place getting instance banned.
Also no modmail, so it can get tedious to find which mod to message
the domain you posted a link to was in our automod blacklist due to previously being used by spam bots.
upon review it appears that this domain serves user generated content by different users that can be determined in the URL path. in those cases we typically only ban those users rather than the entire site if it’s not overly spammy.
we also usually review automod actions quickly, although in this specific case we must have missed this, as we had a lot of other true spam removals in the last days.
you have been unbanned from LW and your post has been restored.
I wonder do you have an appeals method? Threativore for example provides a way for people to open an appeal to its autoremovals via a pm.
you can’t use lemmy PMs while you’re banned from the instance.
appeals can generally be made in any way that will reach our team; email addresses are listed in the instance sidebar and community sidebar at https://lemmy.world/c/support.
Maybe it’s already the case, but may I suggest sending a PM to site-wide banned users including the reason and an out-of-band method for appeals (ie: email adresss).
You could even prebuild the email URL so that the email’s subject, body, etc to already contains the user’s info to facilitate the communication.
Threativore appeals work from any account from any instance, so you can make a throwaway or ask a friend
Sure, the same applies to any other lemmy-internal contact method though such as posting to !support@lemmy.world or sending a pm to @lwreport@lemmy.world.
Our automod doesn’t currently inform people that they’re banned or how they’d appeal that though. We usually review automod actions within an hour though, in most cases false positives are sorted out before the user even notices them.
Well yes, but obviously the threativore appeal process is more than just a pm. anyway, not trying to argue here.
Wow! I’m floored that you routinely review automod actions at all, let alone that quickly!
Thank you for your response. It makes sense that Lemmy’s mod staff are on the defensive lately, just like we are. I didn’t think of Lemmy.world having a support page, and I probably should have appealed there instead.
Thank you for jumping in !
Automatic ban? PTB unless 1) the ban is because of a domain associated with spam, and 2) there’s an appeal procedure for false positives.
They detected your capability for independent thought, and, clearly, they can’t have any of that.
