Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What’s the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

Hello I was born 2 hours ago, can anyone explain to me why a storied institution like NPR would just lie on behalf of a President? They’ve never done this before and certainly not for the Democrats.

There’s like 1 post there per day. You could make 3 posts there per day about various falsehoods levelled at socialism both current and historic, it would derail the comm completely and the users there would get extremely mad about it and unsub because they don’t want to see anti-socialist content debunked.

  • Misinformation is a tricky issue. I wonder if some sort of social media where each “event” is basically like a wiki page where people can contribute new information to it could work. I think a big issue is that corrections tend to not spread as far, and stuff like community notes don’t get seen by people who shared the info previously.

Perhaps a social media where everyone has, like, their own wiki and instead of sharing posts you just accept someone else’s page changes into your local copy, and your friends get notified about your page changing.
