The gross brown material was probably clean white rubber 80 years ago. It probably didn’t look too bad, at least as far as things one might wear when attacked with poison gas go…
Good point, better then nothing for sure! I believe you are right that it was more white when it was new as well.
I believe it was more of a grey/brown uncoloured rubber
