In a thinly-veiled swipe at the United States, Mr Wang said “some country, obsessed with maintaining its hegemony, has gone out of its way to cripple the emerging markets and developing countries”.
“Whoever is developing fast becomes its target of containment. Whoever is catching up, becomes its target of obstructions.”
The remarks are another development in the growing friction between the US and China - with Mr Xi having earlier blamed the West for the difficulties faced by his country’s economy.
Mr Wang said “some country, obsessed with maintaining its hegemony, has gone out of its way to cripple the emerging markets and developing countries”.
China is #2 in global GDP not far behind the USA. China clings to the “emerging markets” or “developing countries” labels for itself to in gain critical benefits of unequal trade imbalances and lack of regulation. It’s currency is now being used by a handful of countries instead of the USD/EURO. I’m not sure it can claim “emerging markets” or “developing countries” labels itself anymore.
Additionally, I’m not sure how China would have reached this position without a specific effort by the United States to engage in increased trade with them.
We said we would trade more in the hopes of an improving human rights situation and steps toward democratic self-rule.
We didn’t get what we were promised. Stop whining, Xi.
We traded with China because it was profitable, the same reason we trade with India despite them being run by a literal fascist. The same reason why we support Saudi Arabia, a literal terror state.
No, actually, all actions taken by Americans are in service of human rights. Even when we jerk off, we do so solely with the intention of expanding democracy.
Reel it back in cuz it’s more complicated than that. Modi is a very recent development and India is very proud of their government and country through their fight for Independence. I hope they can kick that donkey’s ass out soon because they deserve better.
KSA primarily offers stability, not profitability. They provide oil to US allies and counter Iran’s influence. Also notably, until the 2022 escalation, KSA was also the #1 oil importer for China.
The US is basically Willy Wonka mumbling “Stop. Don’t.” When it comes to human rights in China. Just the minimum effort to maintain the illusion of caring.
I mean, if you haven’t been paying attention, you should know the vast majority of animosity Americans have towards China is because of the Chinese-American trade war.
That’s really it. It really is. Poor americans are whipped up into a frenzy to look out for their rich overlords. Both republicans and democrats can unite on this one.
Just look at all the FUD surrounding tiktok. The American ruling class wants some of that easy money and power, so they pull strings to influence lessers to support them.
Anytime I see someone say tiktok is a national security threat, I just know they’re an idiot who can’t see the bigger picture. That’s why they’re ‘the masses.’ The masses are dumbasses.
Oh, i thought it was because of the concentration camps, blatant abuse of international financial agreements and the unabashed pillaging of our intellectual property both academic and corporate. Silly me.
Nope. Americans don’t care about any of that shit, which is why they never focus on nations other than China who are engaging in it. They’re not engaged in a trade war with those other nations, but they are with China.
Where do you think your cobalt comes from? I don’t see anyone saying we should stop trading with the nations who use child labor to bring us our precious metal for cheap prices. Why? Because those nations make rich Americans even richer. China doesn’t do that.
Those same nations also engage in significantly worse human rights abuses than China.
unabashed pillaging of our intellectual property
Yeah, this is part of that ‘trade war’ I was talking about. Not sure why you support hoarding information so rich people can be richer. Oh wait, it’s because you think they deserve it. My bad.
Silly me.
Hey man, we all make mistakes sometimes. The key is to learn from them.
I guess I must not be American because I DO care about it. It’s also not mutually exclusive, you can also be critical of other countries. And to boil down this argument and say that it’s about rich people wanting to get richer is a simplistic view of the world. The Chinese simply do not care about the US and have not been trading with the US in good faith and so have been working against the interest of the American people leeching of our innovation while holding us in contempt. The bottom line is that China got unfathomable wealthy after Nixon opened the flood gates of commerce and allowed the United States manufacturing to be looted by greedy American interest and the Chinese. To say the trade war benefits the wealthy is wrong, corporations will do any amoral thing they can to make a dollar and that’s why sanctions and trade restrictions had to be put in place. Not the other way around.
I dunno. Something tells me you chomp at the bit to say ‘china bad’ but routinely ignore any opportunity to say other nations are worse that the US trades with.

It’s always the west’s fault, ever notice that? Man we just ruin everything…
You don’t buy enough of low quality plastic shit which cripples their economy that’s based on producing low quality plastic shit.
This but unironically.
Yea we made Xi make this choice 100% because we have total control of everything that happens in China. I’ll take personal responsibility for it.
Thats rich, coming from China lmao
Has he tried blaming himself? Dictatorships are not successful as we’ve all learned.

Wow, bravo, very LeBron like.
