We had a few hens taken by raccoons early in the season. They were taken outside but when you tighten up security the raccoons tend to get more aggressive so I built a stronger summer door from the main house.

I believe the word “proof” to a raccoon means “challenge accepted” with that said, that’s one spiffy door

Thanks. I’m fairly live-and-let-live when it comes to the local wildlife. If I can stop the losses I’m happy to have them prowling around at night. There’s lots around for them to eat without taking my chickens. My wife wanted me to commit genocide against the local squirrel and chipmunk population but I quite like them. I ended up trapping them and moving them away from the house. That solved that problem. There is a rabbit that lives out around our poultry. I see it multiple times a day. Yesterday I went out to do some chores and startled it and it ran in one direction then the other and back again. I finally pointed out to it that it was running past three or four feet from me and I wasn’t trying to kill it so it should just calm down and go about its business. Me yelling at it seemed to upset it even more. Heh.
