There does not seem to be really any good FOSS SMS apps. I really like the UI of Simple SMS by SimpleMobileTools but the group chats are so glitchy that I have no clue how that application is anyhing but an alpha release. Is there anything similar to Simple SMS that works? I know QKSMS got abandoned
Qksms is not abandoned. It had an update beginning of the year after almost 2 years without update. So yeah, does not get updated much, but also… its an SMS app, what kind of updates are you expecting?
Clearly I’m missing something, because it’s not been updated since 2021. Nearly 3 years ago.
Unless you’re talking about the not actually released, has to be manually installed, labeled “pre-release” version from GitHub? Which hardly counts.

Clearly you are missing something of you trust Google Play to have the latest version of any FOSS apps. No idea why they didn’t update that there until now, but this is not the measure to take.
This here is on F-Droid
January this year. Now maybe thats the prerelease you talk about, I don’t know, but it can be installed without any additional settings in Droid-ify and the source is not the Izzy repo.
Google Play has nothing to do with it. The developer didn’t submit it to Google Play, as it’s not a final stable release build.
You’re running a pre-release.

I use Silence it’s Foss.
Silence is no longer maintained. I recommend PartisanSMS, an active fork of QKSMS.
I checked out Partisan (last year?) -whenever Signal dropped support - but could not figure out the encryption option? Does that even work??
Oh OK i didn’t know, thanks.
I’ve been using QKSMS for years now and have no reason to change. It works just fine.
I just use the AOSP messenger. If I used google play services, I would switch to Google messages because of RCS and it looks much nicer.
Google deprecated both AOSP phone app and AOSP messenger app a few months ago. Normally, there should be a surge in FOSS replacements for both apps as they are needed by ROM makers to have a good experience (also: i understand it’s not necessarily the most exciting kind of apps to dev yet they are probably among the most risky privacy-wise to make)
