The Fediverse: what is it and how does it work?

For some months now we hear more and more often people talking and writing about the fediverse. Indeed, someone could think that the fediverse is the same as the metaverse and be confused about them.

This is what was worrying me about the fediverse - that some powerful force might be behind it. I suspected taht of crypto, too, and now we have CBDCs and never did find out who Satoshi N. really was - though his name could be translated as central intelligence!

Also, I found it odd that the fediverse seemed to allow itself to be regulated by W3C, but that, too, may just be my paranoia.
