Edit: does editing increment comment count?
It does not.
Edit: the comment count is different on another instance. Maybe editing does increase the count.
Edit 2: it did! After this edit, the comment count should be 2 when viewing from lemmygrad.ml but 5 when viewing from mander.xyz.
