Nope. They stopped using explained Teflon many years ago. They’re now using expanded polyethylene and polyurethane. Which is what many manufacturers trying to be waterproof and breathable do and have done also.
Gore just happens to be one of the best (as demonstrated in the video), but is wildly overpriced. And they have very anti competitive practices that keep them dominant.
Still a great product(price aside), but a bad company.
Just better to do research and get more for your money with similar materials. Eg outdoor research AscentShell for 2/3rds of the price. Same breathability and water resistance, more or less.
I read somewhere that at every single product that has Gore-Tex in it, comes with a lifetime warranty from Gore-Tex, if it were to ever stop working or wear out. I think that alone gives a lot of value to any Gore-Tex product.
Looking at the details of the warranty they’ll just tell you to spray DWR on your $1000 jacket. I’ve never heard of anyone taking advantage of this warranty, and I know a lot of people who would if the outdoor communities found it to be viable.
For example darn tough just sends you new socks no questions asked. Many people utilize it, and talk about it because it’s an easy warranty to exercise. I imagine the reason I’ve never heard of this among these same communities regarding gore is because it’s far from easily exercisable.
I own a lot of expensive gear in my family, between many hobbies. Mostly gore-pro. But I’ve saved a lot on some specific products that had similar specs of breethablilty and water resistance, and been quite pleased.
I’m sure all these companies make some sort of similar claims with ways in the fine print opt to not honor it, or make it inconvenient.
So Gore-Tex is expanded Teflon. and there are cheaper products that outperform it. Crayyy
