In short, I want the ability to hide news and political stories temporarily, much like you might hide nsfw articles temporarily when at work. Id like to be able to maintain all my previously made filters and communities, and still be able to scroll through “all”, but just temporarily hide the news and such, just to get a break from it.

The only option i can think of is to make a second account that has those communities banned, but that wont keep my other filters synced, such as if I have blocked a new nsfw community on one account, it wont sync to the other. Id prefer it to stay on the one account. Currently I mainly broswe through Sync for Lemmy. If there was a feature to turn on a temporary filter list, much like hiding nsfw content temporarily, this would be great

Could you filter them all individually in app, back up you filters, and restore when you need a break? Are filters (not blocks) backed up?

Not a bad idea, but the issue again is i now have two separate filter lists, so then i run into issues where communities i want filtered on both, arent filtered. So lets say i seutup what you said, then all the sudden 5 keeping up wih the Kardashians communities really take off. I would need to block them all on one, and remember all 5 and switch to the other filter list and do the same. I know this all may seem trivial, but thats a simple example. I can think of a few reasons why having interchangeable or combinable filterlists would be really useful

I think there would need to be a federation wide genre classification for that to be possible. Every server and instance and community would have to label themselves as specific things from the ground up.

Ultimately there really aren’t that many popular news comms. It’s like three or four that are always in the All feed. It’s a lot easier for you to simply block those than it would be for the entire network to change at a basic level.
