This just doesn’t seem like the guy worth fighting a civil war over

This is my first lemmy comment… sorry for the low quality response.

These people could coordinate well enough to do Jan 6, but once they actually went through with it, none of them actually knew how to achieve anything that really furthered their motives.

I expect most of these people, whether they realize it or not, don’t actually want revolution. None of them would know what to do with it, or how to achieve it. They just want a simulation of revolution, feeling like they are changing something without actually achieving anything outside of stroking their own ego’s.

Why the fuck would anyone base their entire life and identity around a politician. How fucking dumb.

They live in a bubble that’s been telling them since they were suckling their mom’s tits that the other people are the fascists, and stealing lives and freedoms in broad daylight (the opposite of reality). Add to that the heavy gun culture and nationalism, and you get a mob of people wanting to shoot the ‘other’. Last year a dude was asking Charlie Kirk in public when they should start killing liberals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxNFXJmNhbA&t=15s

Isn’t it hilarious that these same people get up in arms when you point out that if you’re not ‘antifa’ then you must be a fascist? And oh boy they HATE it when they are called that!

Do they not remember the outcome of the first one? They lost…

I wish they’d all just fuck off to their own uninhabited rock in the middle of the ocean somewhere where they can do all the dipshit stuff they want to do and yell into the void. They’re a cancer in this country.

the problem isnt those individual people so much as echo chambers. back when Hillary lost her Presidential bid, there were a LOT of similar calls from the lefty side of the media - inciting riots, etc.

    it’s nothing new, really.

i don’t remember that at all. Calls for outright killing political opponents, and starting a civil war? “A LOT”? There were protests, yeah, but nothing like this.

“both sides” are not the same.

Yeah, it never went that far. I remember there was a #resistance hashtag campaign that started within about 24 hours. There were a couple days there where it looked like Hillary might press the issue. The tension was palpable. There were definitely some people who were fired up and it was potentially a tinderbox, but it didn’t escalate.

Obama was quick to respond and struck the right tone. He acknowledged the disappointment while reinforcing democratic values and peaceful transfer of power. I remember something to the effect of the sun still rising tomorrow so go out and get involved in productive ways. I felt like he was a calming voice at a precarious time, although I didn’t realize the gravity of it at the time.

It was a similar feeling, however misguided, for some Trump supporters after the 2020 election, but that time we had an outgoing president who fed the fire. I don’t necessarily feel like his supporters were somehow “lesser” people than Democrats in 2016. There have been bad presidents before and there are some pissed off people after every election, but every other president had enough integrity to strike a conciliatory tone and move on. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and good people can become very dark when a leader is bad. Trump is one of those bad leaders.

For me, looking at the aftermath of both those elections just goes to show how fragile our system is and how fortunate we have been for almost 250 years. I used to believe the system itself prevented autocratic rule and tyranny we see in other places. Instead, it all hinges on our continued shared commitment, trust in each other, and belief in core American values. Most importantly, it’s the commitment to those values in the face of defeat and disappointment.

Bullshit there were, just because you would kill someone because you don’t get your own way, does not mean anybody on the left thinks like that. Perhaps you don’t get who the left are, they are like against killing folk just because you’re having a tantrum like a toddler.

This both sides shit was projecting when it was first suggested and it’s even less credible now.

The extreme left (if that’s even a believeable thing) come round to your house and force you to recycle and have a composting bin under your sink, they do not kill you.
