I have tried this multiple times, and it seems like I’m missing something. Explanations are all doing a bit of hand waving where they say “put the account in the search field.”

What search field??? The one at https://lemmy.world/communities/listing_type/All/page/1

Because that’s the only one I can find. And it doesn’t return anything when I enter any version of something that would identify the mastodon account I want to follow here.

    Not possible yet. The devs said it may be coming in the far future. kbin supports this, but it’s a bit buggy still and is not yet compatible with Lemmy. I’m considering switching once they turn on federation (so that you can join Lemmy communities from there and vice versa).

    This is all still a bit early still, unfortunately. Though I’m sure now that so many people are here development will accelerate significantly.

    Edit: People on Mastodon can reply to Lemmy conversations, though. And we can see their comments here.

      Wait you can see lemmy feed from mastodon. Please teach me this magic I have both Mlem and mastodon but I’m never on mastodon if i could interact with lemmy on there that might change everything.

        Well, I’m not sure how to post to communities, but you can see all posts from a community by just searching for it on mastodon (use @ instead of !): https://chaos.social/@lemmyworld@lemmy.world There you can also reply to posts, and these replies will show up on Lemmy. In addition to that, you can follow Lemmy users so their comments will show up on your timeline.
