At first, I thought it was just a temporary glitch or something, but a few days pass and I still can’t comment from any if my accounts (I have 5, 2 are on this instance). And I think it’s only exclusive to the Main community, not any other community… the weird thing is, I tried from 4 accounts, the 2 on this instance and another 2, none of them can comment. In particular, I wanted to reply after this comment.

https://readit.buzz/m/main@sh.itjust.works/t/15368/-/comment/113606

Every time it just returns a “language_not_allowed” error. This in Jerboa, I haven’t tried commenting from the web UI.

EDIT: Now this is interesting. I’m in the web UI now and if I follow the link I shared in this post, it says it’s a KBin instance and asks for my login credentials. I noticed there is something funky with the URL and I really have no idea how I’m following this community through KBin 🤨.

EDIT2: OK, I pinpointed the problem. The link to the reply leads to KBin because the reply is from a KBin user account. I can’t seem to be able to reply to that particular comment (seems I can reply to anything that is from a Lemmy instance, but not KBin).

Here’s the post.

https://sh.itjust.works/post/308065

Now scroll down and find a comment from a user named ScrumblesPAbernathy and try to reply to that comment, see if you get the same error as me (language_not_allowed in Jerboa, or just hangs in the web UI).

EDIT3: OK, the solution to the problem was to select English as the language in which you wanna write the reply. There is no such option in Jerboa (yet), but the web UI has it and if you just select English, the reply goes through.

Seriously though, Lemmy is very glitchy. Hopefully v0.18 improves things. It’s in public testing now.

Is the language selection on your profile in KBin set to English? If it is, set it to undetermined, let’s see if that solves the issue.

It was set to English but I just set it to Spanish then back to English to make sure it wasn’t “set to English”.

edit: ok, I read your comment this time. There’s no undetermined language available on kbin. Either I set it to English when I made my account or it’s a default but a language selection is required.

Mhm, mhm… OK, so no undetermined… OK, I guess I can select all of the available languages with English being the first, that could work I guess.

No, I meant set it to undetermined (no selection, whatever it’s called in KBin). Cuz on Lemmy, on your profile, Lemmy warns you that if you change this setting and set it to a certain language, you may not see some posts or communities. My guess is that if you choose English, you can reply and see posts of users and communities, instances, etc., that only have their language settings set to English or Undetermined. Same thing if you choose French or any other language. Their point was, if everyone set their setting to undetermined, everyone should be able to see everyone and everything and reply to everything.

This might be relate to the way ActivityPub works. I haven’t looked at code, just guessing, but all fediverse platforms have a setting like this, so my guess is that this all goes back to how ActivityPub works.

You have a good sense of humor, I like that 😂.

OK, so I ticked the English language on my profile and I went to the web UI to reply, see if it will give me English as the default language if I hit reply… aaaand, no, it still defaults to Select Language 😒. So, basically, looks like I have to select a language and use the web UI if I wanna reply to posts on KBin accounts.

It works for me, but some instances need you to select a language for your post or comment to be made. It could be an issue related to that.

It’s on this community, a thread right here in the Main community. And my account is on this instance.

Could you manually go to the link I shared in my first post (not follow the link, manually go to Main Community), copy permalink and paste the link here?

Yeah, it’s the language selection, I have to choose English, but I can’t do that in Jerboa, doesn’t have that option yet.

Ok, I responded to your comment before but it was from my user page. Now I’m responding from your user page. I can’t see your test comment on the kbin instance I’m on (readitt.buzz). So we’ve got a Scooby Doo mystery on our hands. Or the federation takes some time to catch up and I’ve been drinking. I’m only sure about half of the previous sentence.

          Lol, good one 😂.

It depends on the scrape time interval I believe… like sync time between the servers. I think it’s configurable, so anyone can configure it differently.

For some reason, I can’t see your comment in the thread. I can see it in my inbox, but neither Jerboa nor the web UI loads the thread when I tap the chain icon to lead me to your comment in the thread.

It’s related to the language selection when replying. KBin doesn’t have an undefined language setting, so that makes compatibility issues.

And, for some reason, Liftoff shows the replies and the whole tread just fine (even this thread, cuz there were a lot of replies from KBin). Neither the web UI or Jerboa expand the collapsed replies (they show collapsed by default, as soon as I open the link to the reply), but Liftoff shows them expanded by default 🤷 (currently replying from Liftoff).

have you tried setting the language and not just leaving the default “undetermined”?

i had a similar problem of not being able to reply to kbin replies on my own post. it was the language selection
