    ChatGPT tried to generate a PNG image encoded in base64 (a method to encode binary files as text). In many Markdown implementations, this is a perfectly valid method to store images in comments and posts (although I’m not 100% sure about Lemmy?).

    However, because ChatGPT is basically “what happens when you hit the first suggested word on your keyboard” but big, it got confused and started repeating itself halfway through. The PNG file starts out correct but the binary data seems to be off. It’s possible the image is still correct, but most of the file is absent.

    Someone with even less of a life than me could go through the individual bytes and see if they break the PNG format itself, but I’ll just assume the repetition is because of the AI model messing up.

      Haha weird. Thanks for the explanation. I understand what the base64 encoding was but otherwise I was lost
