I’m not new to fedi but I’m still trying to understand federation with these new projects.
I can sub to magazines/communities hosted elsewhere.
Can I also post there? I see them offered in the dropdown on this composition page so it seems like I can.
To be clear, I’m talking about posting to them with my current account, on kbin.social. Not going and making an account there.
Yep! You sure can. I’m commenting from Lemmy right now, and kbin can do the same.
I knew about commenting, but I’m really surprised that you can make posts too. That would be like posting to the Local feed on another fedi server. Wild
You can post to any instance and even moderate on them too (just follow the instance rules).
Nice! I was unsure if cross-server moderation was possible.
You can post on any instance that’s federated with the one hosting your account.
Ok I’ll have to try that tomorrow, cool.
Yup, you can post to other instances
Do you mean like another kbin instance? I haven’t tried to connect with another instance, but when you attempt to start a post/thread/link [etc] it usually tries to create it in the magazine you are currently in.
What instance are you attempting it on?
Edit: Looks like it works fine - Just make sure to navigate to the instance+magazine you want to post in, and the + button will add your submission in that place. Syntax for viewing/posting on another instance within your current account; treat it like a magazine, with the domain name added:
Interesting, thanks. I don’t see it when I look there though.
https://kbin.place/m/typedesign/newest
So maybe it’s still local but it’s being attributed to a remote magazine?
Do you mean like another kbin instance?
I’m also asking about remote Lemmy communities but I’m not sure if it matters or not, so my question may only apply to remote Kbin instances
Kbin magazines, Lemmy communities, Friendica Forums and Guppe and Chirp groups belong to the “federated groups” category
You can post in any group by selecting it when creating a new article and selecting whichever magazine/community/forum/group you want to post in.
you can also post in guppe and chrip groups on microblog by adding the group’s handle.
@(group name)@(a.gup.pe or chirp.social)
When you comment and post on another instanceiare those comments stored on the other instance or your instance or both?
As far as I know it’s stored on both. Generally anything federated gets stored in multiple servers.
