However, some due diligence on my end reveals you are likely talking about the cables on the bike. I haven’t had a bike since I was a kid, but I know that the rabbit hole goes deep in that hobby, so I am glad I checked. I not too long ago moved to a suburb with some rail trails, so I have been thinking that it might be something to look into, but going in with no knowledge, it is pretty daunting.
Try to find a local bike shop and chat with some of the people there. Let them know that you’re clueless and not ready to buy a bike but are trying to figure out what you need. Maybe make a smaller purchase like a helmet to support them in return for advice.
