Does not have to be a good mmo. Reasoning can be anything. If you read my last post you know I’m a huge fan of dungeons and dragons online, which may not be most people’s ides of a quality mmo.
Feel free to mention old games that aren’t around anymore, upcoming mmorpgs, or anything else you want to talk about really. I’m doing these mostly for my own entertainment, and hope you will feel free to do the same. Please use the games full name at least once, as acronyms can be confusing for myself and people like me.
Bonus points if you tell me about the worst mmorpg you actually like and play.
Star Wars Galaxies. Before Sony pushed the Combat Update which overhauled and ruined a really unique and fun game.
You’re not alone. While I missed out on it, I have heard from many people that it was an amazing game. I’m sure there will be a fan made reproduction or something some day.
Kingdom of Loathing.
I don’t keep up with it anymore but at one time I was glued to the game.
It’s both simple and surprisingly deep. It’s silly, doesn’t take itself seriously, and still delivers good gameplay.
Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. A long time…
If I have looked into this before I’m drawing a blank now. It sounds like it would be something I would enjoy. Thank you!
I like FFXIV a lot. I play it every day (although not as much recently). I love how the gear looks, I like the story and how it gives structure to the game systems, I love the job system. I like how the grinds are long enough for the rewards to be meaningful but not too convoluted or long as to be too annoying to be worth it (GW2 legendary grinds barely feel worth it to me). It’s the perfect chill game for me. And the raids are top notch too. I’ll be trying to start progging ultimates this year.
Now for a bad game I like it would be SWTOR. I wish I had the money to play it in it’s heyday, but even then (and now) it’s hard to shake the feeling you are just playing a slightly worse WoW with a Star Wars coat of paint over it. Every now and again I try to get through another story but the “ded gaem” vibes make me feel I’m just wasting my time.
I played swtor a lot during covid and met a lot of cool people. I imagine server’s were a bit more active then, but they were still pretty quiet. I play DDO a lot which is basically the same game on a diffrent skin, and am lucky enough to be in an awesome guild that makes it easy to find friends. With a level cap that only really goes to 20 it’s a lot easier to fond groups too.
I haven’t really tried that many, or at least I can’t remember many that I got stuck to and really liked. But there is one game that stood out for me, that is Wildstar. I gave it a try when it went free to play.
I really liked the character designs and the classes and the way the combat worked. I also liked riding around on the hoverboard. I haven’t played any game that could replace it so far.
Now that is not a game I have seen anyone say yet! The art style is nice, kind of like wow. I’ll have to watch some game play videos and see what it was like. Maybe you’ll get a private server or a classic revival some day.
Look I know I’m not the only one who feels this way but this is still my truth: EverQuest. Old EverQuest. I’m not gonna compare mechanics, visual quality, UI friendliness, customizability, etc because there are others that do it all better. EQ was brutal, it had a steep learning curve, it took forever to level, to quest, to raid, etc. But my goodness, the sense of accomplishment when you got REALLY skilled at your class, the vibe of having a good group going, the feel I got camping out next to the fire place near the gate in West Freeport, knowing that I was leaving the game but the world was still sitting there running without me, even the experience of recovering from a full team wipe… I know some of it is the nostalgia of the time I was playing it when I could spend all day every day leveling up (yes I’m in P99 now and I LOVE it), but nothing has come close.
Everquest seems to be gaining popularity against all odds. I have had this hame reccomended to me more passionately than any other game. I will, eventually, take the pluge and give it a go.
I’m going to do another post eventually where I summarize these and talk about some of the ones I’ve tried. Like these posts, it’s not going to contain any information or anything intresting, just some things to talk about. I think the reccomendations I got in my last post were much more varied and intresting then what I’ve seen on reddit and other sites.
I just tried bless unleashed for the first time and it seemed really solid, until I looked into the reviews. Anyone have any thoughts on this, Terra, or any of the other impressive looking mmorpgs that never make it to these lists? If you have a favorite that people seem to hate I would love to hear what you like about.
Bless Unleashed has a really long history of being a failure, I think the current iteration is the fifth or sixth version? The publisher has been relaunching this same game for ages, sometimes even changing the platform, usually with few changes if any at all. When the game inevitably fails again, they take whatever money it made, change the name a little and launch it again a few months later. I haven’t seen the current reviews but I’m guessing it’s people warning potential players about the history of this company. In any case, the game in all it’s iterations never seemed more than a thoroughly bland, inoffensive take on an MMORPG that will leave you thinking “Why aren’t I playing X instead?”. That’s my view on it anyway, though it seems consistent with some of the critical reviews it’s gotten over the years
Tera has shut down a while ago, used to be a fun game. I think it has a few private servers out there
I thought I was going to enjoy blesses combat system at first but it just feels…off. Terra looked nice, but from what I’ve heard we’re not missing much.
Vanguard Saga of Heroes, if it had had a year more to cook before launch. I fell in love with the crafting system, and the Diplomacy sphere was super neat.
FFXIV being my other favorite, as it is now.
Same developers as everquest, another one that people are really really fond of.
Ffxiv is the one modern mmorpg I have reccomeneded to me more than any other. I know I’m going to play it, but I kind of want to keep sampling trash first
I never actually played EQ1, although EverQuest 2 was also a favorite of mine. I mostly follow the interesting crafting systems.
On the plus side, ffxiv’s free trial is quite generous when you do get to it.
Already mentioned my favourite in the last thread, so I’m gonna talk about the worst: Metin2. I played it back during it’s peak years circa 2011 or so? Here in Czechia it was incredibly popular, as well as in some other EU countries - no surprise given that basically no MMOs bothered to offer translations to the local languages so it was almost entirely without competition.
I have two problems with the game - first, it was incredibly pay to win (obviously, being a korean title) and second, it’s bland as can be - it didn’t even try to differentiate itself from the other grindfest korean games out at the time. It has a place in the cultural zeitgeist now and a lot of people are nostalgic for it but I really don’t see why, it’s one of the few MMOs I barely remember playing since nothing about it stands out
The OST is a banger though, that’s for sure.
I think we all have a favorite “bad” mmo that still pulled us in . For me it was Atlantica online, which has recently come back for some reason. I remember spending hours wandering around their seemingly massive world. I’m actually going to re-download ot today just to give myself that nostalgia. While it was never a popular game, it ran on my old junky PC and was free. To me, altalntica online is just as essential to my status as an mmo junky as games like wow or dungeons and dragons online.
FF mmos and their job systems are the best “alt handling” out there.
GW2 has the best AH and gear dying system.
WOW has the best UI customization options (via arsons), and there is something about character movement that just feels right.
What’s AH? I’m no good with acronyms.
Edit: is it auction house? Google is leading me to think it’s auction house but I remember people griping about it when I played around 10 years ago.
Yeah. Auction House.
Great parts about GW2 AH/TP(trading post?)
- you can place buy orders. Put a bid for item X at price Y. Someday that may be fulfilled.
- Because of buy orders, you can just instant sell things if you just want fast cash
- Other games do this now, but GW2 was one of the first MMOs i played that had a unit price listing: if i have 20 gold ore. i list it for 10 gold a piece. and someone might buy 13 of my ore for 130 gold. Its not an “all or nothing” ordeal (like early WoW auction house, though WoW also uses the unit price listings).
- Indefinite buy/sell orders. No having to re-post your items on the auction house every 2 days.
But overall to answer the OP question: i don’t really have a “favorite” MMO. Everytime I play WoW, i think I prefer the GW2/FF14 fashion systems over WoW’s. Everytime I play GW2 I’m just underwhelmed by the classes and combat and dungeons. Everytime I play FF14, I’m slightly frustrated with the UI and the movement feels, i dunno, floaty? Having the context of other MMOs sometimes makes me appreciative of good parts of a game, and sometimes makes me wish the game had stuff from other games.
If you can believe it: Ragnarok Online.
Great atmosphere. Really neat isometric view. Fun skills. Interesting setting. The grind was brutal (which I loved). Economy that encouraged a merchant to pay close attention to prices.
This was all before it was purchased and had more cash shop features installed.
Still wish I could go back and enjoy it in its prime again.
If you like a kind of DnD spells and ability formet with full on RvR open pvp, try the f2p Champions of Regnum. It is from the time of DAOC. While it has a big spanish speaking community, there are many English speakers.
