Until this community goes through a round on the new communities/promo communities, you are unlikely to get significant response when posting here. However, I would be very excited to hear ideas about how you think this community should be run and what resources it should offer. Please feel free to post to that effect. Similarly, if you are interested in joining the mod team, please reach out.

Yep these are perfect. Had also considered putting together a separate community for books parallel to !opencourselectures@slrpnk.net. The main advantage there is searchability, but that does necessitate that each post relate directly to a book rather than a collection like you’ve listed here. Also feel free to make a top level post with those links (or if you’d prefer I’d be happy to do it) as that is exactly the sort of content we’re looking for.

Cool that sounds perfect, and I agree with the thought

You can go ahead and add the posts, it might help people see how you would like things to be formatted :)

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that this community exists.

I started retirement planning the summer after I graduated high school. The only plan for a retirement activity that has remained constant over the decades is continuing education.

I’m now retired, but it’s been years since I’ve lived in a university town (or any town, for that matter), so I’ve been looking at various options. I look forward to even a small amount of activity here!

If you haven’t already check out some of the courses over at !opencourselectures@slrpnk.net. This community is intended as a more general version of that project.

If you don’t mind me asking what subjects are you most interested in?

        Thanks for the tip!

        Interests? Where to start!

Calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics to lay some foundations.

        Algorithms, programming language design, electronics.

        Philosophy, physics (various branches).

History, especially Canadian, especially as it relates to the indigenous peoples.

Economics and political theories, especially as can be tied to social systems.

Canadian law, especially as it pertains to rights, freedoms, labour, crown lands, and indigenous territories.

        Maybe a bit of geology.

I currently have little desire for formal certification or degrees.

That’s off the top of my head. I could easily have just been a full time student. In many ways I was, having taught myself enough programming to make a career, among other things.
