I understand the problem with server overloading and the problems with hosting big database etc. But can’t we host short , compressed videos with just good enough quality . Like some of the high quality gifs on lemmy is much ,much bigger than the kind of videos i described . Or am i missing something ? I do understand the issues but then why do they allow big gifs is it because people wouldn’t post much gifs but everyone and their dog will post videos if allowed ? I am saying if 5 mb is the max size of gif you allow set that as videos limit too . AND I NOT AT ALL AM ASKING FOR VIDEOS ON LEMMY JUST ASKING A QUESTION . I IN NO WAY WANT VIDEOS ON LEMMY BECAUSE I KNOW HOW THAT WOULD IMPACT THE INSTANCE HOSTERS . MAYBE JUST MAYBE I SHOULD PUT MY WHOLE THOUGHTS IN A POST BEFORE POSTING AND STOP EDITING IN THINGS AS I GO LIKE AN IDIOT .
EDIT : I put the last sentence in caps because i just wanted to draw attention to it and i am not angry .
Man, my Mastodon instance has ~800GB of cached media.
That sounds like a pretty big design flaw.
I do not disagree with you.
I get the feeling that federation, in its current form, is not sustainable.
Yeah, but people are going to keep working on it as it grows. It’ll become sustainable because of that.
