You know we value diverse opinions, discussion and debate at Exploding Heads. Unfortunately we live in a era when a tyrannical minority are trying to stamp out anything that does not align with their views.

Good conquers evil, although sometimes it takes some time and the good suffer some cuts and bruises along the way.

Our path to victory in life is to be the best people we can be.

With that in mind, I would like to remind you all of the rules for this instance:

Rules

  • Be authentic.
  • Be respectful. Everyone should feel welcome here.
  • No porn.
  • No ads / spamming.
  • No doxing
  • No threats or personal insults
  • No discrimination
  • No gore or graphic video or pictures
  • When posting on a federated instance/community, obey the rules of that instance/community.

You will notice I added the last one in today as a reminder to be good neighbors in the Fediverse.

The no discrimination part is interesting - it prohibits theoretically the use of slurs and attaking people for their race and such, but it also allows people to state things that they believe are truths and to have honest discussion.

Going forward, I think that is a really good policy that is anti-censorship but is also supportive of having free discussion.

Sensible and agreed - we are a FREE SPEECH, ANTI-CENSORSHIP site.

It does not mean that we endorse the occasionally nasty opinions we will allow to be stated…

I believe we can say whatever we want because the truth has nothing to fear of lies, and sunshine is the best disinfectant.

(Two different soundbite quotes there but but there you go)

Good question… There are nasty memes, but I can’t really think of a nasty opinion that has been shared.

It would probably be something that I myself shared - Emmett Till may have inherited psychopathy from his father.

I think it shouldn’t be controversial at all - truth is truth. The issue is that there is this really strong emphasis that certain things are absolutely beyond question if they prop up the American narrative on race and racial relations.

Because I despise it when a very complicated story with unexplored aspects to it is hijacked and becomes an intergenerational piece of propaganda.

Like the case with Matthew Shephard’s death being called a hate crime, or the Pulse nightclub shooting being treated also like an attack that was motivated by a hatred for homosexuality when in reality it was later proven that the only thing the shooter knew about it was that it was a club, and he had gone there because the mall he planned to attack that day was actually more heavily guarded than he was comfortable with…

These things end up taking on a life of their own and are used to make some bigger, more complex issue black and white when these instances themselves are potentially being grossly misportrayed.

meh I think you’re trying to be diplomatic and I think there’s something to be said about that approach, but on the other hand I think mostly the people who will defederate would have done so anyway regardless of us going out of our way to do anything to be courteous
