On Ubuntu I was using sudo with no problem this morning but this evening my password is incorrect… I don’t think there’s anything I can do…
My question is, can I move my Lemmy instance from this machine to another? I understand very little about this. I’m very new at this… So please eli5.
Single user mode, change root password.
Thing is, if you were owned it’s super hard to safely find and presents they left you. It’s best to take your data to offline disks and wipe.
Not sure can that be a problem, but I had simmilar thing when I changed keyboard language in windows by accident (stupid shortcut). My Z became Y and I couldnt type my password xD avoiding Z and Y since Check in any text edditor
That’s hilarious! I wish that was the problem but I checked that I was about to type the password correctly.
If you’ve actually been hacked you want to get your data off to another computer and then wipe the hacked server. You can try and run a rootkit to see if it can detect any signs of being hacked.
Before using any files from the serer, check them carefully for virus and trojans.
If you just locked yourself out of the server by mistake, boot into single-user mode and reset your password.
Either way, unplug the network cable until you figure out if you’ve been hacked or not.
you probably just have to wait 10 minutes for the wrong password lock to expire
If that’s all it is I’d be pretty embarrassed… Lol
I’m confused. Move your instance? As in, you’re hosting an instance?
Correct. Hence the hacked comment.
Yep. I just set it up. I’ve never done anything like this before and I was really worried about opening the ports up because I don’t really know what I’m doing it’s kinda my first time. Besides Minecraft and whatever.
You can mount the disk on a different Linux installation and just grab the docker volumes and config files and recreate it.
Kind of strange to get hacked this way though. Are you sure you’ve been hacked?
No I’m not sure at all but it’s just so so weird! It’s an old password that I shouldn’t have used at all being so old and basic. It’s just annoying typing in your password on Linux all the time lol
