Dungeon Meshi is a well liked manga, and an adaptation by Studio Trigger is now airing. If you haven’t picked this one up, consider joining us. Both for fun and as a way of contributing to activity on Lemmy.
We finally meet one of the other parties central to the plot! They don’t last long, but get used to seeing Kabru and his gang.
Laios’ new pet sword, Kensuke, saves the day! We again run into some new monsters, and hence, some new dishes! This time the dungeon food might finally be too much for Marcille.
I’m not sure how many of you read these, but in the thread for episode one I mentioned in the comments that the souls of people who die in the dungeon, are trapped there, and that this is why revival magic is even possible. Outside the dungeon, death is final.
With that knowledge in mind, the ghosts, and why they try to possess bodies, are a much sadder reality. And it makes Falins reluctance to hurt them all the more sweet.
Remember not to spoil anything if you’re a manga reader, but feel free to elaborate on tidbits of lore that may not be coming through in the adaptation.
Really interesting explanations of “game mechanics” in this setting, haven’t seen a show that actually tries to explain death/revival mechanics in this manner before.
The fact that they actually lean on the world building aspects to inform the plot is pretty based.
Previous episodes mention in passing that the dungeon is the castle of a forgotten kingdom, lowered into the ground and maintained by a mad sorcerer, the dungeon master.
It’s never made completely clear even in the manga, but I think there’s an entire country’s worth of trapped souls/ghosts in there (plus adventurers who never had their bodies recovered and revived).
Marcille was amazing in this episode. Not just by the reactions; unleashing Stun was the right move, she couldn’t really avoid friendly fire. (I don’t think that she thought too deep on this, but still.)
Their faces when Senshi says that they threw away the real gems was hilarious.
You can’t eat money, what would you need it for?
I loved the gag when Marcille realized what was going on with the necklace bug. She went atomic flashbang out of reflex, friendly fire be damned. Compare this to when she very carefully let loose some fire directly behind Laios without even singing his hair.
It was nice to see the party pre-red dragon incident and actually get to know Falin a bit. She is one of those anime characters that doesn’t open her eyes. So…she is either really easy-going and affable, or…she is some kind of evil genius. Time will tell. 🤨 In all seriousness though, I hope we get more of her going forward. I think it is easy to forget that the raison d’être for this journey is to extricate Falin, not just for Senshi to do his best Andrew Zimmern impression.
It was interesting to see a different party’s experience with the dungeon and how easy it is to fall prey to treasure bugs. If it wasn’t for Kensuke, our party’s journey may also have ended prematurely. This also brings me to one of my favorite moments from this episode; when Marcy and Chilchuck are mourning the loss of the gems and suddenly Laios proclaims Kensuke’s name. The shot lingered just long enough for the joke to hit, but not so long that it felt forced.
This episode reminded me of my own experience eating insects without realizing. It turns out that if you see that something is made with acheta powder, that means it is made with crickets. I have had cookies made with acheta and…not bad. I don’t think it is as good as a normal, flour-based cookie, but it is entirely passable as a cookie. Anyway, tangent over.
Really love the ED for this show.
I love how Laios doesn’t hide his affection for Kensuke, but does try to hide that it’s a monster.
I wonder how secret his pet really is to the others, considering he only gets that hyped for monster stuff.
It makes me wonder if he has to keep his sword pet fed and how it might dispose of waste. I thought that might be what he was doing when he took one of the coin bugs and was holding it close to the sword.
In this episode they straight up ate chocolate coins but made from bugs
When they tossed unintentionally treasure over the railing was hilarious. The exploitation and consequences of in universe mechanics is nice to see. If water is affecting the ghosts why not hurl it around in a container that is transparent to them.
Yeah! Chocolate coins! I’m late to the episode but after the Lunar new year I was able to appreciate the coins better.
The holy water on ghosts was amazing. Love how it made ice cream after passing through enough of those ectothermic bodies. Marcille’s happy swinging feet got a lot of screen time 😆
Marcille continues to be a highlight. The frame shrinking away as she realized they were dealing with bugs…
Kabru always felt off to me, he’s one of those people that acts humble and kind, never offending anyone, always maintaining cordiality, but might be a calculating psychopath on the inside. I’m not sure if that comes through to people who haven’t read the manga, I’d love to know.
I feel Chilchack would never have made the mistake of lockpicking a box only to release something deadly. Kabrus’ party acts smug, but they sure didn’t get far on this run.
More flashbacks, more introspection by the gang on what they need to do better, and Laios again manages let out just enough of the weird to piss off his friends.
The animation continues to be fantastic.
I found nothiiing (╥﹏╥)
