  • Calling it now, counterpropaganda and gossip/el chisme are going to die off and leave slop as a pre-rule 8 dunk tank.

Changing the names is necessary but it should have just been new names that clearly communicate the same intent or content, like The Septic Tank or Barbara Pit. Counterprop isn’t going to get much but effort posts about actual propaganda, because the tanks have never focused on specifically countering posts, just mocking them. Gossip sounds like it would either be a celebrity comm or another c/Main, and I’m definitely going to keep forgetting which comm it’s replacing. They’re bad names that make the intents of the comms unclear and won’t have the intended effect on site culture, they’ll just change which comm the posts are on.

  • Vocational training is great for people doing crime because it’s their only option, but less so for people who already have jobs and commit crimes of neglect or laziness - the ones which are most likely to feel remorse for their actions, rather than justified in doing what they needed to survive or just being remorseful they were caught. Like I said, very few crimes it’s actually appropriate for, and vocational training would usually be better, but I still think it has its place.

  • Honestly, at least in any country other than America which I don’t trust to not fuck it up, it’s a much better approach to prison as rehabilitation than most places allow - it allows them to physically demonstrate remorse for the crime by showing up for their sentence, while leaving them with a lot of individual freedom.

Like there’s not really many crimes I think it’s appropriate for - most of the crimes it would be applicable to shouldn’t be crimes at all - but “send yourself to the naughty box” is pretty good for the current prison system.

  • The wiki page on the ascent is kind of hilarious with how it makes the scepticism seem completely racially motivated:

    • Subsequent ascents corroborated the expedition report’s descriptions of the Third Step and the terrain near the summit, and demonstrated the viability of ascending without oxygen
    • Lawrence Wager concluded that the 25 May photos were taken above the Second Step by comparing them to photos from the 1933 and 1953 expeditions
    • contemporary written accounts from the 1960 expedition “incorporate descriptions of topographical details of the final pyramid that could only have been obtained if the party had indeed reached the top.”
    • A study of the video determined that it had been taken above 8,700 m, demonstrating that the party had overcome the crux of the way to the summit

“there was a cliff they said was 3m tall but actually it’s 8m tall”

  • No, it’s because you can’t unstring a crossbow. Both are equally affected by the rain - string gets wet, fucks up the tension, have to wait for the string to dry out to use it again - but you can just take the string off a bow in a few seconds, coil it up, and pop it under your hat to keep it dry. As soon as the rain stops you restring the bow and you’re good to go again, but the crossbows still need to dry out.

There was an additional complication for the Geonese in that something disrupted the supply lines and fucked up their 3-guys-per-2-crossbows tactic (one to fire, one to reload, and one to hold the shield they’re all hiding behind), but I’d also consider that a point in the bows favour - all you need is the big stick, some little sticks, and a dry string.
