Thumbnails with closeups of their face even though they’re not the topic and so on. Plastering themselves in front of whatever the topic is like the topic itself cannot be standalone. IDK if it’s a neurodivergent thing, I doubt. It just all feels hypernarcissistic to me. I spend so much time just curating my feed not to have those.
Veritasium does OK science communication videos, but it’s really annoying when he constantly cuts back to himself nodding during an interview segment. It’s ok, I’ll still watch that garbage.
I believe much of it is to appease the algorithm.
I recently started using this addon which gives you a clip partway through the video so you can see what it’s about instead of someone making a dumb face to drum up clicks.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/clickbait-remover-for-youtube/
YouTube actively encourages it if not outright requires it.
i feel the same way abt tiktok
I have never truly used it apart from lying about using it for a job interview with them (I checked it very briefly and deleted - I didn’t like it).
Worst: those same people (usually lame stream media, pure profiteers, and the worst influencers) hoarding primary sources (i.e. highly sought after videos of original pop culture and political moments), erasing important parts and editing in their own shitty commentary instead of just showing the original god damn thing. Then they make click bait thumb nails that trick people into thinking they’re going to see the original video in question.
