Universal Lemmings was setup as I was unhappy with the defederation policy’s of other instances that I was on. Other than servers obviously set up for bots/spam we aim to not defederate. We will even federate with bot instances if the community wishes. Though I find that incredibly unlikely.

This instance is still very new so you might need to search out your favorite communities again. Im still working on finishing up backend optimizations but once completed I will begin making more formal announcememts and guides on how to get around.

If you have any questions or concern’s feel free to comment, post in the support community or even DM me.

    Great! I love this!

Other than servers obviously set up for bots/spam we aim to not defederate. We will even federate with bot instances if the community wishes. Though I find that incredibly unlikely.

I like the mission, but true “universality” might be too ambitious. In my own instance I implement a very open federation policy, and I’ve already experienced that some situations can get tricky. At the moment an example of a tricky situation (for me) is federation with threads, which presents a new set of potential problems that are different than the problems that I had originally considered when thinking about open federation.

In a forward-thinking manner, you may want to think about the liabilities that you will be exposed to if you federate with instances in which illegal content is posted, or in which illegal activities take place (drug and weapon trade, doxxing, discussions about how to run scams, fraud, etc). You should also think about the type of content that crosses the line for you (even if not illegal - things like gore and pornographic drawings of child-like cartoons) and reflect about whether you would be comfortable having the thumbnails of images that cross your personal boundaries copied to your server.

I think it would be a good idea to state your intention towards universality, but don’t remove your ability of being able to apply common sense. A dogmatic universal promise might back-fire later on when you feel the need to take back your own power. I think that the idea of universal open federation works best when you run your own single-user instance, or share your instance with a few friends, because then you have full control over what you actually fetch.

Of course it may not be completely possible to live up to the ideal 100% but as long as i make a best effort i think its still if value to the community.

In regards to meta as we aim to federate with all we will also federate with meta. When it comes to content that crosses the line for me I will personally block it but not on an instance level. And when illegal content is fetched it will be removed and purged form the server so im not worried on that front.

I guess we will see how it goes. Mabye i will be forced one way or another to defederate, but that will only come after all other possibilities are exhausted. I beileve it is possible. Especially with better mod tools. But who knows mabye im wrong. We will find out.

I know it’s been a while, and you probably forgot about this message even, but what you just wrote is the exact reason why I’m here. I couldn’t have said it any better myself - bravo!

It’s been a while coming, but I’m finally moving all of my activity over to your instance. You seem to have a very good take on the entire federation process, and I’m really happy to read stuff like “I will personally block it but not on an instance level.”

There are shitty people everywhere. Fortunately it’s quite easy just to not engage with them.

Thank you once again for setting up unilem. I hope it will survive for many years to come.

It is certainly possible! But it might get tricky! Good luck!

Edit: i should have read the comment above before posting

Still learning how all this works, but what is your opinion on threads? Is it possible to federate with that as well? I imagine that might be a serious expense hosting an instance federated with that though
