Historically, communist revolutions have occurred in countries with extremely low literacy rates. Once education becomes something only the bourgeoisie have access too, and is no longer being used as a means of pacifying the working class, the proletariat can “feel out” the contradictions in the system much more clearly, even if they would lack the means of articulating it all fully.
