I put peanuts out for them and from time to time they bring me back something shiny in gratitude, like a soda can’s pull tab.
We have some that like to raid the dumpsters at my work, grabbing all the out-of-date tossouts. Some of us try to leave their preferred grabs open and easy to get, so we don’t risk a bird getting caught when someone goes to crush the trash.
They’ve learned to recognize who’s going to open things, and will wait with a shiny sometimes. It’s hilarious to walk out with someone else, and watch them observe, deciding if it’s safe to fly over or not.
You know what’s really cool? Crows share this knowledge, so there are crows out there who know you’ve done their crow friends a solid, and they’ll look out for you. Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/likeus/comments/ctaif0/some_amazing_details_about_the_little_girl_who/
I’ve been putting out peanuts for a nice crow family that lives in the trees out back for quite a while. They let us get within a few feet of them now, and they never caw at us; we call them our polite crow family. But no shinies yet, sadly. It’s okay, I’m not doing it for the shinies.
That’s adorable.
Crows and Ravens are cool. Magpies though…
Don’t be bald around them and you’re good.
