Welcome to the Vegan Theory Club Weekly Megathread!
Question of the week:
Who is your favorite visual artist?
Feel free to talk about anything, whether it’s vegan-related or not. This is a chill space for connecting, sharing ideas, and supporting each other.
Looking forward to hearing what everyone’s up to!
Greetings from the bear site! I forgot vegantheoryclub existed for some reason and stumble upon this post via our modlog of all places. I subbed to a few comms. Hope y’all don’t mind!
Thanks for joining the comms! One of the good things about vegantheoryclub and hexbear is that we both block neo liberal right wing instances like lemmy.world and lemmy.ca so you shouldn’t see threads with comments you can only see from certain instances
Based mod. I think I’m gonna like it here lol. Tbf, I think .world blocked us and if that’s the case they were doing us a service.
Who is your favorite visual artist?
…
This is a chill space
Asking me to pick favorites is not chill. I put A LOT of thought into “taste”.
Tastes are ephemeral and can change at any time!
That makes it even more difficult.
Do you know how hard it is to have 4D taste?
Vincent van Gogh since seeing his Sunflowers 🌻 series in 3rd grade art class, especially after learning in my 20s that we share migraine disease. Louis Wain is a close second with “Cat’s Nightmare” (my profile picture) being one of my faves.
Also, I went down a 90s kid nostalgia trip recently and watched some FernGully clips. Anyone remember that movie, specifically Batty’s rap? It was about vivisection 🤯 I was tempted to post it in the music community lol.
Van Gogh is another of my favourites. I remember seeing a Doctor Who clip a while ago where they bring him to the future to show him how successful he becomes posthumously. I’ve never seen Doctor Who before but that clip really moved me.
Wow, same here! I hadn’t watched the show either and that clip had me blubbering.
I mentioned this a while ago, but my favourite artists are Frida Kahlo and Francisco de Goya.
Both extremely powerful. It is amazing to me in the time of cheap imagery where we are surrounded by media and art all the time on our phones and printed cheaply everywhere how impactful their images were in their time
Yeah, I feel the same way. My favourite period of art is Surrealism (with Goya generally considered to be either the first surrealist painter or the last traditional one, included him anyway tho). We studied his work during my first year of Art History including how the sort of “hierarchy” surrounding curated art has evolved over the centuries.
