    It looks like Spanish realism transported out of the quaint villages into the harsh reality of industrialised cities, therefore expressing the sentiment of the “Stadtgedichte” of the 1920’s.

    The contrast between the flower on her dress, the potted plant on the balcony and the dark chimneys and chaotic shop signs in the background.

    Beautiful.

      I feel like the haircut is saying something too – I believe it’s a bob cut which represented modernity and contrasts with the faintly visible church dome representing tradition.

      I didn’ t realize that was a potted plant, but that makes sense. The flower on her dress contrasts with the bare branch in the background; it is through her own efforts (cultivating, like a potted plant) that she blooms.
