Hello, I’m thinking of creating a matrix account after a long time and I thought about creating one on an anarchist server (like something with similar ideas in this lemmy server). Do you have any suggestions? I was looking at this database, but it says it has gone down and they provide a json list.

I found https://4d2.org/ , but I saw that they removed the mention of anarchy from their description. (Compare this snapsot from 2025/01/05 with today’s snapsot.)

Hopefully this is the correct place to ask, if not, pls direct me to a more appropriate community:)

Edit: The admin of the server told me that 4d2 became a non-profit company (https://www.acabinc.org/) and they don’t want to look that political to avoid any legal issues (I think they have to be non-politicaland such, so they removed the mention of anarchy from their website description.😄 (I eventually made an account there.)

Matrix isn’t very popular amongst Anarchists in my experience (for various reasons, amongst which is the capitalist nature of it).

They usually fall in to camps: the non-techy or overly pragmatic ones that just use what is popular, usually meaning Signal and Discord and the techy and privacy concious ones that use XMPP (over Tor).

      capitalist nature of it

About an hour ago, I found out that element is maintained by a for-profit company, is that what you mean?

Also, hm, I see, kinda sad. I get that matrix isn’t the best, there are probably better alternatives (possibly Jami, briar etc. (and even signal now that you can hide your phone number?)), but I see that many people and communities use it, so I thought about making one account.

      Thanks for the heads-up:)

Not only Element (the client) but most of the popular servers as well and they are selling their services to law-enforcement and the military.

But if you just want to access some Matrix communities no need have a specifically Anarchist run server though, right? Just try to not get too dependant on it as Matrix is being enshittified as we speak.

Ughh, ok, I wasnt aware, thank you!

And yeah, probably not gonna use it for more than a few chatrooms for people or communities I can’t contact in any better way

          Thanks again

How is Matrix enshittifying? I’m not paying attention to it because I can’t selfhost it so I wouldn’t know.

They recently moved large parts of the code-base away from the (faux) foundation back into ownership of Element (the for profit company), slapped a CLA onto it and soon after made the main server software open-core and are trying to get people to switch to their vastly more efficient but proprietary “Pro” version of it.

IDK if it’s 4d2 in particular. But AFAIK many are removing any political mention to avoid prosecution. Wouldn’t be surprised if this where the case, anarchists are not well regarded on both sides.

Matrix (the one I’m talking about here) is a federated communication protocol. It’s kinda like an alternative to IRC or discord if that helps. Like with activity pub, people can create servers and those servers can federate with each other. More info here: https://matrix.org/ (though as one commenter here said, it’s probably not the best platform to use)
