I think there’s a human tendency to believe whatever we’re doing is important and morally good, and this creates a huge messy gray area between the hypothetical pure grifter and the true believer. If you or I took up crypto scamming as a vocation, we’d probably justify it to ourselves with a Robin Hood narrative, but believing that cryptocurrency is the correct and just future would serve the same purpose. An Indian guy promoting western fascism because it pays the bills will come up with a reason this is a good idea, but his peers may come up with different ones, and there’s no guarantee of any ideological consistency between them, because these are just a pool of people who found ways to justify this particular bad idea to themselves.
