Title: Too many nicoleposters on lemmy.
Seriously. I keep getting reports (admin) of her DMs but i never see anything actually harmful on her messages. A matrix room [full of racists :/] A discord room, basically full of shitposters. And both of these have an admin, just completely inactive. I will try to DM her directly, and visit the other links.
Who is the woman in the picture? Certainly not “nicole” that we know. Might it be a harassment campaign against her?
I’ve noticed a huge wave of spam, with a lot of motifs in applications too. Is this all related? Is this a huge conspiracy or am i looknig too deep in nicole???
Oh what’s the name of this scam…? John Oliver did a thing on them. It’s basically a long game confidence trick.
Compare it to the 419 scam, aka the Nigerian Prince. They blast out a message to every living thing in the virgo supercluster that “You could be rich if you act on this RIGHT NOW.” The message has intentionally bad grammar and such to immediately ward smart people away and only catch the dumb ones. “Wire us a few thousand dollars to cover some paperwork costs and fees and the 2.6 million will be yours.” They interact with you for maybe an hour.
People caught onto this and have been specifically trained to look out for and avoid it. Strangers asking for money is now a red flag. So what they do now is they pretend to be a friend. You find them in personals, interest groups, whatever. They start talking to you, you make a friend. They spend weeks or months chatting with you, maybe budding a romance. They do their homework, things check out. Eventually they mention in conversation that they just bought an expensive thing with the money they made in some investment. “Really, what investment?” you’re obviously going to ask. “Oh I trade penny stocks with this app.” They never ask you for money, they just show you how to download an app from the Play store, which is there, it’s legit, there’s supposed to be some kind of vetting process on the Android Play Store or the Apple App Store…right? You “invest” some money, then it and your friend suddenly vanish.
And you get people on TV saying “I thought we had a real connection. I’m out several hundred thousand dollars.”
Even this one has an element of filtering for the dumb. We’re all here laughing because “who would fall for this?” That’s a feature, not a bug. They want the ones that would bite on this. And then the long con starts.
Its called Pig Butchering
That’s the one.
Great explanation, thank you
