Kinda curious because a lot of our heraldry and vexillology, although it looks great, it always include the same 2 or 3 symbols, like the hammer and sickle, red star, etc., and there isn’t much variations in the symbols used. So, staying away from stuff already used by Socialist states and movements, what are some non-Communist symbols do you think are a good fit for it?
It usually goes like this: “Guys, the hammer & sickle is outdated” or “we need new symbols which aren’t demonised to appeal to the masses” then “check my new idea”
Aaaand it’s always some ultra or anarcho or succdem westolefto.
No need to throw out the hamsic, but the lack of peasantry in imperial core countries makes the use of a symbol of unity between proles and peasants a bit odd.
Sigmarxism it is then (but not the reddit one).
The hammer and sickle is great, it represents the masses probably the best out of any symbol we have, never saw it as outdated, nor do I want to appeal to the masses with new symbolism which isn’t demonized. But, I just feel we can use a lot more symbolism and be a lot more varied in our heraldry and vexillology. I’m just looking at this through a design perspective, and to sorta get us to think about what we can do.
I don’t disagree, it’s just that resigning from H&S is ofen talked and proposed by people who also resign from marxism.
I think the best example for good change in symbolism is juche.
Older tools are often more recognisable than newer ones, after all the “Save” symbol on computers is almost universally a floppy disk. But we can have your cake and eat it too, if you look at the seals or coats of arms of socialist countries, you will often find that the heraldry gets much more high-tech than that. For instance, Laos and the DPRK both use a hydroelectric power plant, and Romania had a tractor and then an oil drill.
However, I think a class of items that is sorely missing from ALL socialist flags and seals is musical instruments. They convey harmony, emotions, communication, attention, cooperation, entertainment, and quality of life, they are recognisable even as a silhouette, they have natural colours like gold, black, and silver that go well with red, yet they aren’t used anywhere in socialist iconography and I think it is necessary to change that.
Replace it with a CNC milling machine and combine harvester
Cogs are always nice since it implies both industrialization and cooperation.
Gotta put them 3 cogs together to make it work 3 times as good 👍
I agree with the symbolism but I’ve never seen a cog in a design that I like.
I’m not going to suggest dolphins because they have already been used, but I like animal imagery so I want to recommend a couple to consider.
- Ants and Bees: strong association with working and communal effort
- Crows: intelligent communal animals who are also a bit vengeful and represent transition
- Flamingos: LGBTQ+ association and groups that works together while allowing individuality
- Elephants: Big, stronk, and have deep community ties enough to morn each other
The biggest issue is there may be difficulty translating animal imagery across cultural boundaries.
People are especially into bees rn
Orcas?
In my mind, I included them with dolphins which were excluded. We know they are already fighting the good fight.
Aren’t dolphins horrific rapists and extremely sadistic to each other, their prey, and humans?
Rape and sexual coercion has been observed in many animals and is hardly unique to dolphins. If you look at humans we display horrific behavior on scales no animal is capable of especially to our prey(which may include humans). Dolphins are aggressive predators and sexually aggressive as well, but I don’t think it is reasonable to judge other animals using human morality. Dolphins exhibit altruism helping injured and dying members to stay afloat. Dolphins are able to communicate through vocalization with each other and are able to exhibit multigenerational social learning. Dolphins also exhibit other undesirable behaviors like infanticide. It’s important to have a nuanced view on the world and banish black and white moralism.
I think it is import to respect animals and nature for what they actually are instead of what you want them to be, but for symbology most people don’t think rapist when they see a dolphin.

I think any sort of food imagery that is popular in your country could work too. Not overly prepared bourgeois recipes, just the normal food of normal people.
Have a rice.
Trees. I think they are a good indication of growth and change (Dialectics) and their life-giving oxygen is a good metaphor for how we give and take from society, we add to its value and growth, and it helps to sustain us.

The basic machine tool thingy from hoi4 looks nice.
